Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor VI – Confutatis and Lacrimosa

by on September 8, 2010

John Eliot Gardiner conducts the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. This performance was filmed at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelona in Dec. 1991. A Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic tradition is a service designed to pray for the souls of the departed. The parts of the liturgy that are meant to be sung are what constitute all Requiem Mass compositions, including Mozart’s. The structure is as follows: 1. Introit 2. Kyrie 3. Sequence: a. Dies irae b. Tuba mirum c. Rex tremendae d. Recordare e. Confutatis f. Lacrimosa 4. Offertory: a. Domine Jesu Christe b. Hostias 5. Sanctus 6. Benedictus 7. Agnus Dei 8. Lux Aeterna Mozart died before finishing the Requiem Mass, and his wife Constanze gave the task of finishing the work to a pupil of Mozart’s named Süssmayr. From the Sanctus onward, the Requiem is the creation of Süssmayr, though he did use portions of the Introit and Kyrie for the Lux Aeterna. Despite, or maybe partially because of, the controversy surrounding this Requiem Mass, it is widely regarded as Mozart’s greatest masterpiece. Latin Lyrics and English translation follow: CONFUTATIS Confutatis maledictis, When the damned are cast away Flammis acribus addictis, and consigned to the searing flames, Voca me cum benedictus. call me to be with the blessed. Oro supplex et acclinis, Bowed down in supplication I beseech Thee, Cor contritum quasi cinis: my heart as though ground to ashes: Gere curam mei finis. Help me in my final hour. LACRIMOSA

@TheJmacaroni They are basset horns; they are related to the clarinet and are in the key of F

I would never have guessed that the Lacrimosa was completed by Sussmayr. I’d say he did a damn good job!

Confutatis maledictis,
flammis acribus addictis,
voca me cum benedictus.
Oro supplex et acclinis,
cor contritum quasi cinis,
gere curam mei finis.

When the accused are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the blessed.
I kneel with submissive heart,
my contrition is like ashes,
help me in my final condition.

Oh. Never mind then.

Terenatula September 8, 2010 at 5:30 am

@earthcent: That’s why it’s a requiem (for the dead). :)

earthcent September 8, 2010 at 5:31 am

Christ! They make it sound like somebody died or something.

Talk about a tone for death I don’t think any other exists

Truly this man was genius

bballmike25 September 8, 2010 at 7:21 am

theres no solid evidence where mozart had ended on his requiem

Chazzbass13 September 8, 2010 at 7:58 am

lacrimosa, is mozarts finally piece so to speak, and it completely reflects the end of his life, it is dark and wrought with misery.

fairiebee September 8, 2010 at 8:52 am

@steviekeyz I agree…this is Mozart’s work.

steviekeyz September 8, 2010 at 9:30 am

@rossyxan There are letters where Constanze mentions drafts of the requiem sent to Sussmayr. It is almost impossible to believe he made up the rest after 2:58…

Too true, @flowforms. Still, you must admit that it makes a hell of a great story, no? (And hey, don’t blame films too quickly – the film Amadeus was adapted from a play which first brought this old and discredited theory back to life.)

@flowforms haha LOL true. You have a qood point XD
CONFUTATIS MALDECTIS [i think...]

flowforms September 8, 2010 at 11:48 am

@ViolaGirlLovesMusic …….poor old Salieri, who never in reality helped Mozart finish anything. Oh well , never mind… films always seem to stuff up reality

wolfgang17561 September 8, 2010 at 11:53 am

absolument magnifique. comme dirait le poëte Sebastien piedrabuena, si la beauté avait un nom elle porterai celui de Wolfgang.

ViolaGirlLovesMusic September 8, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I watched AMADEUS where they showed Sallieri helping Mozart finish the Requim Mass. This isn’t that bad actually, it’s quite cool. But now I’ve got CONFUTATIS MALEDICTIS stuck in my head! :D Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [aka WOLFY!!] is a great composer!

commandantvk September 8, 2010 at 12:50 pm

This part, the Confutatis, tops all other pieces.

It’s really hard to sing correctly !! But if it’s done correctly, the result is awesome ! ^^
Mozart is really The Master. One of the greatest Genius in the Earth.

@rossyxan The melody in the 9th bar of the Lacrimosa was composed by Eybler. He was the one who was initially called upon to complete the Requiem. There are problems with the Suessmayr completion of the Lacrimosa that suggest it’s mostly, if not all, Suessmayr, problems that are uncharacteristic of Mozart: faulty counterpoint at 4:18, clumsy handling of the lyrics “Pie Jesu Domine” for the bass at 3:30, the absence of an ‘Amen’ fugue, etc.) Modern completions like Levin’s “fix” these problems.
